Heather Hill, a decorator with Country Sampler Decorating Ideas magazine, uses antique bobbins, natural raffia cloth and small pebbles to make bobbin candleholders. Materials: Antique wooden bobbins Raffia cloth Scissors Thick white glue Sponge brush Pea gravel Drill and 1" drill bit - Some bobbins already have holes drilled in the top. If not, drill a hole through one of the spools, using a 1" drill bit, which is large enough to create holes that will accommodate tapers (figure A).
- Measure the distance between the top and bottom spools of the bobbin.
- Cut a piece of raffia cloth the width of the bobbin's stem and long enough to go around the center (figure B).
- Brush a coat of thick white glue onto the stem of the bobbin with a sponge brush, and wrap raffia cloth around the center. Let dry (figure C).
Variation: - Brush a coat of thick white glue onto the stem of the bobbin, and press small pea-gravel pebbles onto the glue. Let dry (figure D).
