    Figure A

This decorative box, which utilizes paint and polymer clay, is a good beginner project that creates a dramatic Asian look.

    Materials:

    Block of gold polymer clay
    Block of black polymer clay
    Two 12" bamboo skewers
    Papier mache box
    Black enamel spray paint
    Aluminum foil
    Glue gun

    1. Use black spray enamel to paint entire box; allow to dry thoroughly.

    2. Work both colors of polymer clay to soften.

    3. Cut or roll several small strips of black clay and add to sheet of gold. Roll the two together to create a marbled look.

    4. Shape clay into 2 balls, place on sheet of aluminum foil and press down slightly.

    5. Work gold clay and 1/8 of a block of black clay separately to soften.

    6. Use pointed end of one skewer to create tunnels through the middle of the clay ball.

    7. Cut or break the other skewer into 4 pieces and run them through the prepared tunnels, crossing them for decorative effect (figure A).

    8. Bake according to manufacturer's instructions. When handle has cooled, use hot glue to attach to the top of the box.
