Vinyl, leather or cloth string or laces can be used. Regardless of the material, a crossed pattern seems to provide the most finished look.

Pat DeSantis demonstrates how easy it is to create a expensive leather-look box.

    Materials:

    Papier-mache box
    Silky or twisted cord
    Leather, vinyl or cloth laces
    Scissors
Acrylic paint in black and burnt sienna
    Crackle medium
    Paintbrushes
    Brown paste-type shoe polish
    Soft cloth or towel
    Shoe brush
    Tapestry needle
    Awl or nail starter

    1. Paint the box and top with black paint and allow to dry.

    2. Apply crackle medium over paint, following manufacturer's application and drying instructions.

    3. Next, apply burnt sienna paint over the crackle finish and allow to dry.

    4. Apply shoe polish over the box and buff with shoe brush (the brush will allow the polish to get into the cracks of the crackle medium). For added patina, an additional coat of polish may be added.

    5. With the awl, punch evenly spaced holes in a vertical line up the side of the box near the corner. Repeat for other side of corner.

    6. Thread needle with cord and begin lacing from the bottom up. Start at one hole and move across the corner up the box and up through the next hole to create a crossed pattern.

    7. When the box has been laced to the top, bring both ends of cord to inside of box, tie into knot and glue to secure. Or, if desired, the laces can also be tied into a bow on the outside of the box for a more decorative look.
