Kid crafting doesn't always have to be done just by children; sometimes it's more fun to get the entire family involved. Kid crafter Joe Lamancusa and his mom, Kathy, give some great craft projects that the whole family can enjoy together.

One project is a time capsule (figure A). This is a great way for the family to collect and store memories of special occasions and achievements for recollection in later years. Here are some tips and suggestions for making a time capsule:

    • Fill the time capsule with photos of friends and family, special cards or small personal gifts, report cards and newspaper articles. Use anything that will remind you of the time period.

    • Seal the capsule and decorate it with the names of everyone in the family, the year it was made and the year to be opened.

    • If you are going to bury the capsule, why not make a treasure map for future use when digging it back up.

Another project Joe mentions is sand art ( figure B ). He suggests filling a glass jar with different colors of sand. Each person in the family should have his or her favorite color. Add the sand layer by layer. This way everyone can contribute to the unique design.
