Turn an ordinary shoebox into a treasure box for storing toys, games or special kid stuff. Katie Munday of Kemper Tools explains how to sponge-paint the box and paint on flower dots, grass and a sun. Then she describes making a polymer-clay bee to glue on the box.

    Materials:

    Shoebox
Acrylic paint in green, red, yellow, purple and pink
    Kemper Designer DotsB.
    Kemper Decorator ToolsB.
    Household sponge
    Paper plate
    Water
    Scissors
Polymer clay in black, yellow and white
    Heart clay punch
Pasta machine (Note: After a pasta machine has been used to condition clay, it cannot be used in food preparation.)
    White glue

    1. Pour green acrylic paint onto a paper plate. Dampen a rectangular piece of household sponge with water, and dip it in the paint. Sponge-paint the outside of the shoebox (figure A).

    2. Use a spiral-shaped wire tool from Kemper's Decorator Tools and yellow paint to create a sun (figure B). These tools consist of different-shaped wires on a stick that are dipped into acrylic paint and stamped onto surfaces. Add blades of grass with a straight wire-shaper tool (figure C). 3. Add flowers to the sides by using several different dot-stamping tools and various colors of acrylic paint (figure D).

    3. Add dimension to the decorations on the box with polymer-clay figures. Katie created a bee with three balls of polymer clay. Condition the clay by working it in your hands. Form the head and tail of the bee from two black balls of clay. The center of the bee is a ball of yellow clay. Punch two heart shapes from white clay for the wings, and place them on the yellow ball. Add two circles of white clay on the head for eyes. Dot the eyes in the center with black clay. Add a small cone-shaped piece of yellow clay at the back for a stinger. Bake in a 265-degree oven for 20 minutes (figure E).

    4. Use your imagination, and create other clay animals such as pigs, teddy bears or lobsters. Attach them to the box with white glue (figure F).

    5. Run clay through a pasta machine to create sheets that can be decorated with stamping tools.
