Vicki Payne, host of DIY Crafts, covers cardboard boxes with fabric to coordinate with any room decor and create attractive containers for storing craft or office supplies or other small items. Materials:
Cardboard box
Fabric
Kraft paper
Pencil
Scissors or rotary cutter and cutting mat
Straight pins
Spray adhesive
Craft knife
- Start with a sturdy box in good condition.
- Create a template for the fabric covering by placing a piece of kraft paper on the work surface. Place the bottom of the box on the paper, and trace around it with a pencil (figure A).
- Rotate the box 90 degrees to one side so the side of the box is flat on the paper. Line up the bottom edge with the outline just drawn. Trace around the side of the box. This portion of the template will be used to cover the side of the box (figure B).
- To add the pattern for the inside of the box's side, reposition the same side of the box so the bottom of the side is placed on the top line, and draw around the side of the box again (figure C).
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the three other sides of the box. You will have a template that resembles a plus sign. Cut out the paper template (figure D).
- Repeat the template-making process for the top of the box.
- Place the paper template for the bottom of the box on the fabric, centering any design in the fabric in the center of the box. Secure the template to the fabric with straight pins. Cut out the fabric with scissors or a rotary cutter and cutting mat. Repeat with the box top (figure E).
- Apply spray adhesive to the wrong side of the fabric for the box bottom. Place the box bottom on the wrong side of the fabric, matching corners, and smooth the fabric onto the box bottom (figure F).
- Wrap the fabric up the sides of the box, and fold the excess to the inside of the box (figure G).
- Repeat steps 8 and 9 for the box top.
- Cut a piece of fabric the same measurements as the box top, and attach it to the inside of the top of the box with spray adhesive. Do the same for the box bottom.
