    Figure C

Display a favorite collection in a shadow box made to fit a table. Lined with velvet and covered with a sheet of glass, it shows off a collection beautifully and protects it at the same time.

    Materials:

    Table
    Four pieces of 1" x 2" lumber
    Miter box and back saw
    Wood glue
    Clamps
Paint or stain and necessary tools for application
    Velvet or velveteen
    Fusible tape
    Steam iron
    Spray adhesive
Piece of 1/4" glass cut to fit the top
    Four glass bumpers

    1. Choose a table to use as the shadow-box display unit. Make the sides of the shadow box with four 1" by 2" boards cut to fit the perimeter of the tabletop. Use a miter box to make 45-degree corner cuts (figure A).

    2. Run a bead of wood glue along the bottom of each 1" by 2" board, and set them in place to form the frame of the tabletop. Align the mitered corners, and clamp all sides (figure B).

    3. When the glue has dried, remove the clamps, and paint or stain the wood as desired. Let dry.

    4. Line the interior of the shadow box with velvet or velveteen. Cut a separate piece of fabric for the bottom and each of the box's interior sides. Finish the hems of each piece with fusible iron-on tape, and attach with spray adhesive (figure C).

    5. Arrange collectibles on the velvet, set a glass bumper at each corner of the box, and cover with a sheet of glass.
