    Wallpaper-Covered Hatbox

    Materials:

    Hatbox
    Wall covering
    Wall-covering primer
    Vinyl-to-vinyl adhesive
    Brush for applying wall covering
    Plastic drop cloth
    Wall-covering primer

    1. Remove the cord and prime the hatbox with wall-covering primer.

    2. Make a pattern to fit the hatbox lid by tracing around the lid's perimeter onto the back of a piece of wallpaper. Add a 1" allowance all around, and cut out the pattern (figure A).

    3. Cut 1/2" slits in the allowance of the lid pattern about 1" apart, all the way around, so you'll be able to fold it down over the side (figure B).

    4. Brush wallpaper paste onto the back of the lid pattern. Book the wallpaper piece by folding it onto itself, and let it set up for three minutes.

    5. Press the hatbox lid onto the sticky side of the wallpaper piece. For a smooth hem on the border of the lid, press down every other piece, then go back and press down the remaining pieces (figure C).

    6. Cover the side of the hatbox with a laser-printed border cut to fit. Apply the wallpaper paste, book the wallpaper piece, let it set up for three minutes, and fit it onto the hatbox.

    7. Covering the bottom is optional. To do so, follow the instructions for covering the top. Replace the cord, if desired.
