Carol Duvall, host of HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, colors unfinished wood with Dylon® cold-water fabric dye. The colors are surprisingly vibrant. She creates bright, fun wooden boxes, frames and clocks using color dyes and adhesive-backed wooden cutouts from Walnut Hollow. Materials:
Dylon cold-water fabric dye Wooden boxes Wooden cutouts Masking tape Paintbrushes Warm water Measuring cup Small containers for dyes Tweezers Rubber gloves Paper towels - Wear rubber gloves when mixing dye. Rather than mix the dye according to package directions, pour it from the package into 1 cup warm water. Mix thoroughly. Pour the dye into small containers that will be easy to work with.
- When painting the larger wooden cutouts, create a handle from a piece of masking tape to attach to the back so you can hold them in your hand. Fold a piece of masking tape in half, sticky sides facing. Pinch the sticky sides of the tape together about 1" from the fold. Flare the two ends of the tape outward, and stick them to the back of the wooden cutout. Grasp the piece of tape that is stuck together with your fingers (figure A).
- Paint dye onto the wooden cutouts (figure B).
- Grasp small cutouts with a pair of tweezers, and dip them directly into the dye. Place on a paper towel to dry (figure C).
