Texturizing paste may be used on almost any surface to create a raised surface. Doxie Keller, creative director for DecoArt®, explains how to use DecoArt Decorating Paste to give a papier-mache box a soft Victorian look. Materials: Papier-mache box Chalk DecoArt Decorating Paste Acrylic paints Walnut gel stain Spray finish/sealer Small palette knife Brushes Soft rags Optional: old toothbrush Optional: sponges - Use chalk to outline the desired pattern on the lid of the box. To create flowers, draw a circle surrounded by half-circle petals and leaves.
- Apply paste with the palette knife, spreading it like peanut butter to form leaves and layered petals (figure A). Let it dry overnight.
- Apply a base coat of paint with a brush, pushing the paint with the brush into all the nooks and crannies of the design. Let the paint dry.
- Paint the raised design areas with acrylic paint (figure B). Lightly spatter paint over the entire surface to camouflage paint drips or other errors. Sponge-paint the edge of the lid, if desired. After the paint dries, apply two coats of spray finish/sealer.
- To antique the design, brush on a layer of walnut gel stain, and immediately wipe off the excess with a soft rag (figure C).
