Crafter Donna Long covers an accordion file with scraps of wallpaper to match a room. Use a decorative file for storing recipes, newspaper articles or incoming mail.

    Materials:

    Accordion file
    Cardboard
    Wallpaper
    Wallpaper border
Vinyl wallpaper paste and border paste
    Wallpaper smoothing tool
    Scissors
    Craft knife
    Paintbrush
    1 yard ribbon
    Sponge
    Bucket of water
    Binder clips

    1. Cut two pieces of cardboard 1/4" larger on all sides than the dimensions of the cover of an accordion file.

    2. Cut two pieces of wallpaper 1" larger than the cardboard pieces all the way around (figure A). The extension will be folded to the back of the cardboard, leaving a finished edge.

    3. Apply vinyl wallpaper paste to the wallpaper with a paintbrush, and wallpaper the cardboard. Use a wallpaper smoothing tool to make sure all bubbles are eliminated and the paper is smooth. Turn the overlap to the back of the cardboard pieces, fold a triangle at each of the corners, and cut away the excess wallpaper along the triangle fold (figure B) to create a mitered corner (figure C). Apply wallpaper paste to the overlap, and paste the wallpaper in place, smoothing with the smoothing tool. Wipe away any excess paste with a wet sponge.

    4. Cut a piece of wallpaper border the width of the accordion file, and apply it over the wallpaper on the cardboard pieces near the top edge. Fold over about 1/2" of the border to the back side of the cardboard pieces along the top edge and sides. If the border has an interesting pattern, you can cut into the border along the pattern, leaving a cut-away edge (figure D).

    5. Cut a 1-yard piece of ribbon in half. Apply wallpaper paste to the ribbon ends, and glue them to the inside top edge of the accordion-file sides to create a decorative tie. Secure them by stapling through the ribbon and the file. Cover the staples with cut-out motifs from the wallpaper glued on top (figure E).

    6. Assemble the file by pasting the wallpaper-wrapped cardboard pieces onto each side of the accordion file. Apply wallpaper paste to the entire back of the cardboard pieces and around just the edges of the accordion file. Use binder clips to hold the cardboard in place while the wallpaper paste dries. Place a small piece of cardboard between the clip and the wallpaper to protect the wallpaper from indentations from the clip.

    Wallpaper-Decorated Stool

Cut out motifs from wallpaper, and glue them to the top of a wooden stool, using wallpaper paste. Paint the legs of the stool a coordinating color (figure F).

    Place Mats Made With Wallpaper

Mary Lyon, host of DIY Crafts, explains how to make place mats with wallpaper. Cut the edges of a piece of wallpaper with decorative-edged scissors, and laminate the wallpaper on both sides, extending the laminate 1/4" beyond the wallpaper. Trim the laminate edges with decorative-edged scissors (figure G).

Cover a cork bulletin board with wallpaper, and wrap the edges with cording (figure H).
