Chris Wallace, formerly a craft designer with Duncan Enterprises, gives a hope chest an antique look with the verdigris technique.

    Materials:

    Aleene's Premium-Coat® Acrylics: AY 146 Sage, White
    Aleene's Essentials®: OC 302 Antique Gold, OC 304 Copper
    Aleene's Enhancers®: EN 104 All-Purpose Primer, EN 107 Matte Varnish
    Aleene's 3D Accents®: Design Paste, 3D 401, 8 ounce; Design Templates, TC 226 Grape; Design Tools, TC 001 2" Trowel, TC 002 4" Trowel
    Variety of brushes
Low-tack spray adhesive or masking tape
    Sandpaper
    Paper towels
    Two sea sponges
    Wooden or papier-mache box

    1. Apply one coat of primer to the box, and let dry. Sand lightly.

    2. For this step, refer to Aleene's 3D Accents package instructions. Apply low-tack spray adhesive to the back of the grape design template, and let dry.

    3. With the 2" trowel, apply Design Paste to the template. Remove any excess with the 4" trowel (figure A). Carefully remove the design template. Let the design dry, then use sandpaper to remove any rough edges.

    4. Paint the design with sage paint. Let dry.

    5. Thin white paint with water until it has the consistency of light cream. Use a sponge to apply the mixture sparingly in a random pattern to the verdigris area. Slightly dampen a second sponge, and use it to remove any undesirable white areas. The white surface should appear very sheer. Let dry (figure B).

    6. Using a stiff-bristle brush, dry-brush with antique gold, then copper, as follows: Dip the bristles into color, then wipe off almost all the paint onto a paper towel. Don't use as much copper as gold, as copper is too bright. Brush lightly over the box (figure C).

    7. For a protective finish, apply one coat of varnish to the box (figure D).
