Carol Duvall, host of HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, explains how to frame beautiful gift bags in a shadow box made from an inexpensive frame and dried or pressed flowers.

    Pressed-Flower Picture Frame

    Materials:

    Wooden picture frame
    Gift bag
    Flower-patterned paper napkins
    Decoupage medium or Mod Podge®
    Paintbrush
    Hot glue and gun
    Pressed flowers
Background paint for frame, or gift-wrap or other covering

    1. Remove the glass and back of the frame. Work first with the front of the frame.

    2. To decorate the edges of the frame, separate the layers of a paper napkin patterned with flowers. Most such napkins have three layers. Tear the top patterned layer into small pieces (figure A).

    3. With a paintbrush, apply a small amount of decoupage medium or Mod Podge to a small area of the frame. Press pieces of the torn napkin over the decoupage medium, and smooth with the paintbrush. Continue until the frame is covered. Brush a layer of decoupage medium over the napkin pieces on the frame.

    4. Decide on a background color for the arrangement inside the frame. You could paint the back that came with the frame, or cover it with napkin or gift-wrapping paper.

    5. Hot-glue the gift bag to the background. Hot-glue pressed flowers to the background so they appear to be arranged in the bag. Decorate as desired.

    6. Reassemble the frame (figure B).

    Acrylic Frame

    Materials:

    Acrylic frame
    Gift bag
    Foam board
    Craft knife
    Hot glue and gun
    Spray adhesive
    Optional: acrylic paint
    Optional: gift-wrapping paper
    Pressed or dried flowers

    1. Separate the pieces of the frame. If it comes shrink-wrapped, leave as much of the protection on the frame as possible to prevent scratching the surface while you work.

    2. Make a "shadow box" by cutting two pieces of foam board to the inner and outer dimensions of the frame. Center the smaller piece of foam board on top of the larger piece, and use spray adhesive to glue them together (figure C).

    3. If desired, use the backing that comes with the frame. Turn it around to make a shadow box, and paint it or cover with desired background (figure D).

    4. Hot-glue the gift bag to the backing or foam-board shadow box. Decorate by gluing pressed or dried flowers to the background.

    5. Place the acrylic frame front on top of the foam board or frame backing. If you use the foam board, the acrylic frame will fit around the smaller foam board and rest against the larger board. Glue around the outside edges, if desired (figure E).
