Doxie Keller of DecoArt uses Decorating Paste to add dimension to roses and leaves that she sculpts on the lid of a papier-mache memory box. The paste can be painted with acrylic paint and antiqued with an antiquing gel.

    Materials:

    Papier-mache box
    Chalk
    Pattern
    Palette knife
    Cake-decorating tube and tips
    Paper plate
    DecoArt Decorating Paste
Acrylic paint in medium green, light green, teal, pink, white and burgundy
    Paintbrush
    Antiquing gel

    1. Papier-mache boxes don't require any preparation. They can be used just as they're purchased.

    2. Use a piece of white chalk to draw a freehand pattern on the top of the box, or trace a pattern of your choice (figure A).

    3. Place a small amount of Decorating Paste on a paper plate. Using the back of a palette knife, load a little paste on the knife. The consistency is much like frosting.

    4. Spread Decorating Paste onto the top of the papier-mache box, following the lines of the leaf pattern (figure B). Leave a slightly raised buildup of paste near the edges of the design to add dimension. If you don't like the way it looks, scrape it off with the knife and start again.

    5. Use the edge of the knife to pull a line through the paste at the center of the leaves to give them a realistic look (figure C).

    6. Load the back of the palette knife again with Decorating Paste, and apply it to the roses of the design, swirling the knife in a semicircle and leaving a buildup of paste around the edges of the circular petals of the rose (figure D).

    7. Fill a pastry bag or cake-decorating tube with Decorating Paste. Do not use this pastry bag or tip for food preparation once you've used it for Decorator Paste. Use a flat tip, and practice on a paper plate. Squeeze out the paste in a straight raised line (figure E).

    8. Try it next on the papier-mache box to create the border along the top of the box. Squeeze Decorating Paste from the bag in a line, then reverse the motion, squeezing a little more to create a raised ribbon effect (figure F). Finish the border around the entire box. Let the paste dry overnight.

    9. Squeeze light green, medium green and teal acrylic paints onto a paper plate. Dip a paintbrush in each of the three colors, and paint over the entire top of the box, covering all the crevices created by the Decorating Paste (figure G).

    10. Squeeze white acrylic paint onto the paper plate. Dip a small brush in light green and white paints, and paint over the raised portions of the leaf design (figure H).

    11. Squeeze pink and burgundy acrylic paint onto the paper plate. Dip a small brush in the pink, burgundy and white paints, and paint over the raised portions of the rose design (figure I).

    12. Go over the top of the box with antiquing gel. Paint over the border paste with antiquing gel to give it a bronzed finish. Paint the sides of the box as desired (figure J).
