Do you have items you want to hide away but they're too large to fit in the closet? You can decorate a cardboard storage box to look like a trunk. But because it has no bottom, it fits easily over the top of large items -- such as a sewing machine -- to conceal them when not in use.

    Materials:

    Large cardboard box
    PEELnSTICK® double-sided adhesive
    Foam board
    Trunk corner hardware
    Trunk lock hardware
    Fabric, remnants or sheets
    Spray adhesive

    1. To create the illusion that the box has a lid, cut four strips of foam board approximately 5" wide by the length of each of the four sides of the box. Apply PEELnSTICK to each strip, and attach the strips to each side of the box so that the top edges are flush with the top of the box and the strips extend 5" down each side of the box (figure A).

    2. Cut the bottom off a large cardboard box, leaving the four sides and the top. Cut a piece of foam board the same size as the top of the box plus the thickness of the edge of the foam-board side pieces. Apply PEELnSTICK paper-backed adhesive to the foam board, and stick the foam board to the top of the box. This will be the top of the faux trunk and will reinforce it so it can hold some weight (figure B).

    3. Select the method you prefer for attaching the fabric to the box. The least expensive method is to use spray adhesive. Just spray it on the box, and place fabric over it, smoothing the fabric with your hands. Or use HeatnBondB. iron-on adhesive, following manufacturer's directions, and iron it to the fabric. Peel away the paper backing, and attach the fabric to the box. It comes in 1" roll for small projects, in sheets for larger projects and by the yard (available at fabric stores) for even larger projects.

    4. Cover the faux "lid" and top of the box in a coordinating fabric. Add metal trunk-corner hardware to the corners of the box with hot glue or crafter's cement (since the corners are merely decorative, you don't need a strong adhesive). Add a faux trunk-lock hardware piece to the center of one side of the box, with the top piece affixed to the faux lid and the other half to the box (figure C).

Tip: Keep the boxes from large purchases, such as computers or sewing machines, so that you can make a faux trunk that will fit.
