Basic hex nuts are the key ingredient in these hip, modern drink coasters.

    Materials:

    thin cork plant coasters
    E6000 glue
    waxed paper
hex nuts (approximately 25-40 per coaster, depending on the size of the hex nut)
    craft knife
self-healing mat or other safe cutting surface

    1. Squeeze a small puddle of E6000 glue on waxed paper (figure A): dredge the flat side of one hex nut through the glue (figure B).

    2. Place the hex nut in the center of the coaster. Continue to fill the rest of the coaster, piecing together hex nuts edge to edge. Leave gaps, if desired, to achieve a honeycomb effect.

    3. Let the glue dry for 24 hours.

    4. With a craft knife and working on a self-healing mat or other safe cutting surface, cut out any exposed areas of cork at the edges of the coaster and in the gaps around the nuts (figure C).
