    From "Uncommon Threads"
    episode DUCT-111

Allison Whitlock makes a gift for her sister, a bride-to-be. Using vinyl and felt appliqué silhouettes, she creates a unique photo-album cover modeled after a picture of the happy couple.

    Materials:

    12"x12" photo album or scrapbook
14"x40" piece of vinyl or leather (cream, or color of your choice)
2 pieces 9"x12" felt in different colors (we used Eazy Felt in brown and Stick-It-Felt in tangerine)
Sulky 100% rayon thread to match the felt colors (you could also use any other kind of strong glossy thread)
#18 sewing-machine needle (it's heavier and will sew through vinyl easily)
digital image of the bride and groom
    tracing paper
    photo corners

    1. Using a rotary cutter, cut vinyl or leather to fit the album. Allow 6" at either end to fold around the cover (figure A).

    2. Enlarge the digital image to the desired size and print. If you can't do this at home, take the CD or photo card to a print shop and they'll do it for you.

    3. Lay tracing paper over the image and trace around the silhouette shapes of the bride and groom (figure B). Use a different-colored pen or pencil for each so that you know which part of the pattern to use for each color.

    4. With the tracing paper as a template, cut out the shapes from felt, using one color for the bride and the other for the groom.

    5. Stick or pin down the design onto the front of the vinyl and edge-stitch with contrasting thread using the sewing machine (figure C). If you use adhesive felt, you can just stick it down.

    6. Fold the cover over the album and pin in place. Remove album and edge-stitch along the top and bottom, creating the album pockets as you go.

    7. Place cover over album.

    8. Print a second, smaller-sized color image of the bride and groom and place it on the first page of the album with photo corners (figure D).
