Q: I have a very large, very messy bag of seashells from our very fun family vacation. I want to use them in some crafts projects. What should I do before using them? And if I use them on frames, is there a special finish I should use?

A: (DIY crafts expert Carol Scheffler) I love using keepsakes from vacations in my crafting projects. There are so many different things you can do with shells, but you definitely need to wash shells before using them. After all, they once housed living creatures, so you need to get all remnants of their former inhabitants out.

To clean out the shells, use a bleach and water solution and soak them in a tub or in the sink. After they're clean, you can protect them with a coat of polyurethane, Mod Podge or evena coat of paint.

Q: I recently was at a friend's home and she had family photos that she had made into magnets stuck to her refrigerator. I asked her how she did it, and she said with a laminating machine. Can you tell me about this machine and how it's done?

A: Laminating machines are great for making all kinds of things, from magnets to stickers, using your personal photos. There are several good machines available in crafts stores, but only you can determine the model you need. Depending on the medium you use, you can turn photos into magnets or stickers -- or just laminate them.

Q: I love to shop garage sales and flea markets, and I tend to buy a lot of old books? Do you have any ideas for dressing some of them up?

A: Old books from flea markets are great sources to decorate. You can alter them by refinishing the covers or the pages inside -- or make an "altered book" by decoupaging on the cover or the pages. Another fun tip is to make a cut-out area in the books to hold trinkets.

Time-Saver Tip: Here's a great idea for a party activity -- and the fastest way to make a scrapbook ever! At your next party, have on hand a stack of paper, a bucket of markers and a basket full of stickers (the wider the choice of images, the better), as well as a Polaroid or digital camera on hand. Take individual pictures of all your guests, and then let each of them create a page about himself or herself, the good times you've shared or their favorite thing about you. At the end of the party, gather up all the pages and put them into a book. Instant memories!
