Tom Lenks started as a hobbyist but is now a professional coin collector and appraiser. Lenks shares some expert advice for starting a coin collection: - A coin's value is sometimes determined by an error that occurred during minting. When looking for coins, collectors should examine them carefully for anomalies in a coin's appearance.
- In the past, proof sets were created with a copy of each coin minted for the year. Proof sets are virtually untouched -- mint employees wore gloves when handling them -- and pristine condition makes coins more valuable.
- Collectors should start a collection by looking for something they find interesting -- for example, a certain design, denomination or president -- and then collect that.
