Cutting and polishing reveals the beauty of what was once an ordinary looking rock.
|
Bill Gooch says part of the fun of rock collecting is the field trips that "rock hounders" take to find them. Gooch says hounders look for good shapes, but also whether the texture of the stone will allow it to be polished into a smooth, finished stone. Rock sediment can create beautiful patterns -- some even look like drawings. With experience, rock collectors can determine which ones will work for particular projects just by looking at the rock. Equipment at the club's workshop allow the hounders to cut and polish their own stones. The club's equipment includes cutters and grinders to spare interested hobbyists start-up expenses and give them space to work with others with the same interest .
