This resin Robin (a.k.a. "the Boy Wonder") is one of DeRuvo's recently completed projects.

Hobbyist Fred DeRuvo became interested in character model kits as a child, and his interest was rekindled when he saw the same kits available a few years ago. The sense of nostalgia led DeRuvo to pursuing the hobby as an adult.

The models, which range from superheroes to movie monsters, are fabricated from resin. Each kit includes unpainted body parts and retails for around $30.

DeRuvo paints and assembles the piece and then dry-brushes to create detail and texture. He dabs his brush onto a paper towel or cloth to remove excess paint before applying over the painted piece.

DeRuvo, who is a teacher, is so passionate about his hobby that he has introduced it to his sixth-grade class and created a newsletter, Modeler's Resource, to share tips and techniques .
