After playing around with the computer program for a while, Greg McMichael comes up with a floor plan for the placement of furniture in his Major League room (figure A). The first thing he adds to the room, though -- before any furniture -- is a large area rug to help absorb some of the noise. The color choices in the rug work well to complement the other furnishings and the memorabilia placed around the room.

    • A soft leather sofa anchors one end of the room (figure B). At 84" it's a perfect size to accommodate several guests -- or one former baseball player!

    • McMichael is justifiably proud of his professional background, and what better way to demonstrate that pride than by giving pride of place to a leather chair made in the shape of a glove (figure C). If ever an accessory reflected its owner's life and interests, it's this particular chair! And opposite it, at the other end of the sofa, McMichael places an official Major League armchair.

    • What would an entertainment room be without a place to sit and eat (or possibly play games)? A round game table and four chairs fulfill that requirement in short order (figure D).

    • New stools featuring the Mets insignia on the seat invite guests to gather round the bar (figure E).

    • McMichael was fortunate enough to find a section of stadium seats at a local antiques shop for $50 (figure F). Not being sure whether he wants to position them permanently, however, he ends up bolting them to a plywood frame (figure G) and adds some less-than-perfect stenciled numbers (figure H) to emphasize their well-worn appearance. An application of orange oil brings out the still-handsome finish of the wood.

    • Once all the furniture is in place, McMichael goes about adding a real baseball look to the top of the table -- by creating a "pizza slice" effect with team pennants (figure I). Not as common as they once were, these brightly colored pennants are nevertheless an easily identifiable symbol of America's favorite sport. They are simply laid in place around the tabletop, then trimmed at the bottom layer (figure J) to level the middle, and finally covered with 1/2" glass.

    • For the coffee table, McMichael has taken the desired measurements to a metal fabricator and had a box with a false bottom fashioned. He adds baseballs, a glove, a hat from an All-Star game and a bat, then tops it with protective glass (figure K).
