This plane took three or four months to complete. Richards suggests that beginners try the hobby by purchasing kits before investing a lot of time, effort and money.

Hobbyist Bob Richards says he "hears" the model planes he builds and can imagine them soaring into the clouds. Richards finds the hobby relaxing, but more important, he finds that it reconnects him with his childhood and the lost dreams and fantasies of his youth. The hobby is almost an obsession for Richards, who has a workshop, garage and display cases full of models -- with 4,000 models waiting for assembly. He is particularly fascinated by the models of the World War II era -- and has a library full of books and research materials on model warbirds. Richards hosts a club gathering at his home on Tuesday nights. The "Balding Eagles" are model-plane enthusiasts who meet to assemble, research and discuss projects.
