Jerry Slocum has over 20,000 mechanical puzzles, and his collection grows by at least 1,000 puzzles each year. Slocum is so avid about collecting, he branched out to invent new puzzles and author books on the subject. Slocum's collection includes puzzles that can be put together, taken apart or rearranged and originate from all parts of the world. Mechanical puzzles are special , Slocum says, in that all implements must be built in -- the user cannot use outside tools to help solve the puzzle.
