Kitty Bartholomew, host of HGTV's Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home, visits her friend Nancy Tumler, whose Venice, California, cottage is filled with collections. With about a dozen categories of collectibles, Nancy has learned to be inventive with her displays.

Shelves are an important means of displaying collections, especially in small spaces. Prominently displayed in Nancy's living room is a tower of glass shelves that shows off one of her favorite collections -- fruit and vegetable ceramics (figure A). Strings of tiny globe lights illuminate the collection, which is backed by a mirrored wall. The combination of twinkly lights, glass shelves and mirrors keeps the look airy and lets the light shine through.

On the opposite wall an armoirelike structure shows off a varied collection of colorful leaf plates (figure B). The armoire is actually a spray-painted white bookshelf, which sits atop a dresser.

In the kitchen a shadow box is the perfect display unit for Nancy's miniature fruit and vegetable collection (figure C). Above the kitchen sink an ivy-twined shelf provides space for collections of pottery and ceramic chickens (figure D ). Collections of napkins rings are ingeniously displayed in a pair of wood cases set on end and fitted with dowels (figure E).
