Interior designer Ton Luyk doesn't think of his fabulous old and new collectibles as making up collections -- they're just groups of objects whose design, shape or form caught his fancy during his travels. Tied together by a common factor, the items in each grouping function as a harmonious whole. To display an uncommon collection well, find a common factor -- similar tone, color or material -- that ties the objects together. The similar tone of a group of inlaid wood and intricately designed objects from Africa, Madagascar and India tie one uncommon grouping together. Wooden objects Ton acquired on trips to Indonesia, Africa and New Guinea are placed together on shelves to create a unified look. Create "tablescapes" on infrequently used pieces of furniture. A seldom-used dining room in Ton's home is used to display an all-white collection of sculpture, vases, candlesticks and flowers. Grouping similar small items together increases impact as well.
