Another way to economize on fabric is to cut a hem facing separate from the sleeve. A faced sleeve rolls up to reveal a cuff out of the same or different fabric. Here's how to create this detail: - Lay a piece of tracing paper over the bottom of the sleeve pattern and trace the shape of the sleeve from the bottom up as far as you wish the facing to go; add seam allowances to both pieces (figure A).
- With right sides together, the sleeve facing is sewn to the sleeve edge, with the seam allowance pressed toward the sleeve body (figure B).
- Cut the pattern out, keeping in mind the placement of pattern pieces you devised over the dress form.
- Sew the pattern together according to the pattern instructions.
Expert tip: You aren't limited just to making blouses out of vintage tablecloths: there are lots of ways to use favorite old fabrics you've collected over the years. Below are a couple; you can probably think of many more once you get started. - Use a cozy old wool blanket to create a coat for a favorite child.
- If you have odds and ends of lace, use it as inserts in pillow tops.
