Neatly set-in sleeves add to both the comfort and the appearance of a garment. Here are the first steps to adding sleeves to the reversible robe.

    1. Stitch sleeve to robe body at shoulder. Clip seams; press open (figure A).

    2. Matching underarm seams, pin long edges of sleeve and body together, leaving an opening of approximately 10" in one sleeve (in the middle of the seam, not at either end) for turning the garment after it's sewn. Be sure to open out the underarm seam as you sew, in order to reduce bulk (figure B). Be sure to pivot carefully at the points where the pocket and the robe meet (figure C).

Expert tip: When you're leaving an opening for turning a garment -- or anytime you want to avoid the seam's ripping open -- simply reverse the direction on the sewing machine and backstitch a few stitches to help hold the seam.

    3. Treat pocket seam allowances.

    4. Bar-tack top and bottom of pocket opening.
