Want to design a bunch of T-shirts for friends and family? How about personalizing shirts for a birthday celebration? Screen printing is a great way to decorate T-shirts and fabrics (figure A). Materials:
Silk screen (wooden frame with a fine fabric stretched across it) Freezer paper Note card Nontoxic water-soluble ink Drawing fluid Screen filler The first few steps are getting the screen ready to transfer the image. - Draw a design onto the silk screen.
- Brush drawing fluid on the design (figure B).
- After the drawing fluid has dried, add the screen filler and use a note card to pull the screen filler across the design (figure C).
- Let this dry and then wash the screen with cold water.
- Dab ink on the silk screen.
- While holding the frame down on the fabric, use the note card and pull the ink over the design. This will transfer the image onto the fabric (figure D).
- Because this is water-based ink, the transferred image will need to be heat-set with an iron before washing.
Tips: - Go over the design twice to get a solid image.
- Use fabric markers to add detail to the design.
- Trade screens with friends.
