Elona Hamilton, owner of the Stamp Affair rubber-stamp company, uses fabric ink and rubber stamps to create a beautiful rose design on a silk blouse.

    Materials:

    Tissue paper
    Rose rubber stamps
Permanent fabric inks with sponge applicators
    Silk blouse
    Straight pins
    Heavy scrap paper
    Pencil
    Cotton swabs
Cardboard T-shirt board (to place inside the shirt so rubber-stamp ink doesn't bleed through to the back)
    Post-It ® Notes
    Small artist brush

    1. Make a tissue-paper template, using a strip of tissue paper the length of the front of the blouse, and stamp images on it to determine where to position the design. Stamp rose images on a larger piece of tissue paper and place it near the shoulder or wherever you want the design. This tissue template is a guide to the final stamping (figure A).

    2. If the blouse is new, wash it first to remove sizing. Follow any suggested washing instructions on the label. Place the T-shirt board inside the blouse, and pin the front placket to the board with straight pins (figure B). Make small pencil marks on the blouse to indicate the position of the design based on the tissue template.

    3. Apply black fabric ink to the rubber stamp, using the sponge-top applicator. Use a cotton swab to clean areas around the stamp that may have picked up excess ink (figure C). Stamp the image onto the blouse, lifting the stamp straight up as you remove it. Rocking the stamp back and forth may transfer excess ink to the blouse.

    4. Continue stamping images down the front placket.

    5. The rose design on the shoulder is made up of multiple images of the same large rose rubber stamp. Stamp the image on a Post-It and cut out the image to form a mask you'll use to cover portions of the image already stamped on the silk (figure D).

    6. To prevent the fabric from moving, push straight pins through the blouse and into the T-shirt board in the area to be stamped. Stamp an image of the large rose rubber stamp in the shoulder area. Place the Post-It Note mask over the stamped image, and stamp another image onto the blouse, partially stamping over the top of the Post-It Note and the blouse. Remove the mask, and the second image will appear to be positioned slightly behind the first one (figure E). Continue stamping and masking until you have the desired design.

    7. Tap the fabric-ink applicator tip on a piece of heavy scrap paper to start the ink flowing. Load a small artist brush with ink, and paint roses on the blouse (figure F). Vary the color intensity by applying less ink to the outer edges of the rose petals.
