Make this yellow submarine costume for your child.

    Materials:

One 1/2" thick foam, sufficient for 2 pieces the same size
    Marker pen
    Approximately 1 yd. yellow felt
    Felt in other colors
Fabric blue or strong spray adhesive
    Needle and thread
    Yellow bib overalls
    T-shirt

    1. Find a simple cartoon drawing of a submarine to use as a pattern.

    2. Lay out the foam and draw the outline of the submarine on it.

    3. Cut both pieces the same. The height of the submarine should be approximately the distance from the child's knees to his/her chest.

    4. Lay out the yellow felt and cut two pieces with an extra 3" all around to be folded over the foam.

    5. Glue each piece of felt to the foam. The felt is glued to the outside of each piece of foam.

    6. Sew the front and end of each piece of foam together (the nose and the tail piece of the submarine).

    7. Slip the bib overalls into the center of the submarine and sew them to the sides of the submarine.

    8. Cut out the decorative parts of the submarine from felt of other colors, spray one side with adhesive and position on the yellow submarine on each side. The portholes should be at least 6 inches in diameter.

    9. At the copier store, blow up pictures of your favorite rock n' roll stars, or family members, then cut them and glue them into the portholes. They should be at least 4" in diameter.
Note: Foam and felt are harmless and lightweight, and easy for a small child to manage. Papier mache is too heavy.
