With a few items, you can turn yourself into a lion for Halloween.

    Figure B

    Materials:

Sweat pants and shirt in an ochre or camel color
    Dye (if necessary)
1/2 yd. each of felt in ochre (camel), dark and light tan
Permanent fabric glue or sewing machine

    1. If you can't find sweats in the color you want, buy white or beige and dye them. It is okay if the dye is uneven; you can also paint the sweats with dye so that they look more like a lion's fur.

    2. Cut an equilateral triangle that is 30" long on its longest side, and 15" from the middle of the long side to the opposite point. This is the base of the mane, and looks like a kerchief.

    3. Draw three straight lines parallel to the long side of the "kerchief." The longest should be about 24" long. These are guides for placing the mane.

    4. Cut about 60-80 strips from all three pieces of felt. These should be 1" wide by 20" long.

    5. Place 25 strips perpendicularly to the first guideline you've drawn. Vary the colors randomly and sew or glue them at their midpoints (figure A) to the "kerchief." It's okay if they overlap each other and it's good if they aren't all exactly the same.

    6. Repeat on the second and third guidelines on the kerchief.

    7. Tie the kerchief on the "lion's" head, covering his head and ears, and tying the 2 ends at the nape of his neck. Let the strips fall to the back and trim any that seem too long. You can also cut some strips lengthwise so they seem more furry and hairy.

    8. Cut a 36" x 4" strip of felt and sew it lengthwise, tapering to 1/2" wide at one end. Cut away the excess. Tie very narrow 6" strips to the narrow end (figure B) and use safety pins to pin the fat end of the tail to the back of the sweat pants.

    9. For the final touch, add a little black eyebrow pencil to your face for nose and whiskers.
Products: Clothes are available in sports shops or thrift shops. Fabric and craft supply stores can provide everything else.
