Note the color shading in the fleece, from light in the center to dark on the edges.

When the winter winds start blowing, it's time to pull out the fleece and start sewing! Susan Khalje and her guest, Nancy Cornwell, share some tips for creating a soft fleece pullover accented with trapunto stitching (figure A).

    Materials:
Commercial pattern of your choice: plain-front, simple pullover style (choose a pattern suitable for lesser stretch or woven fabrics)
2 yards 60" Nordic Ombre Fleece (Note: The pattern featured on this episode is Stretch & Sew #130 -- Tops to Go!, using the tunic with mock turtleneck view. The bottom edge was curved to create a shirttail hemline. If using a plain solid-color fleece, refer to the pattern instructions for yardage and layout. For more information on choosing appropriate patterns for double border prints, refer to the Polar Magic book, resource information given below.)

    Notions:
Thread for construction (40-weight rayon thread, darker than fleece color)
    14/90 needle
    4.0/75 or /80 double needle
Clover Mesh Transfer Canvas Clover Water-Soluble Pencils, sharpened to a dull medium point
    Sulky KK2000 temporary adhesive spray
Sulky Cut-Away Soft 'n' Sheer stabilizer: 1/2 yard
    Polyester stuffing: small handful
4-ply acrylic yarn: 2 yards,br> Tapestry needle with large eye (to accommodate the yarn)
Polar Magic book (optional, but very nice for reference)

    Pattern Layout:

    • Cut out garment front, back, two sleeves, and a 12" X 22" rectangle (for the neck trim). Refer to illustration for pattern layout.

    Construction:

    1. On the right side of the front, use water-soluble pencil to draw center front line extending 10" down from neckline.
    2. For motif placement, mark a dot on drawn centerline 4" below cut neck edge.
