If you garden, you know that garden gloves are a necessity. Ribbon expert Ellie Schneider of Offray Ribbon Company explains some fashionable, fun ways to dress up those necessities. Materials:
Cotton garden gloves
Sheer lavender wire-edged ribbon
Scissors
Floral wire, 24-gauge
1/4" gold ribbon
Gold beads
Hot glue and gun
Sewing needle
White thread
1 1/2" grosgrain ribbon, red with white dots
1/2" grosgrain ribbon, black
1/2" silk ribbon, turquoise
1" grosgrain ribbon, white
3/4" silk ribbon, green - To create a butterfly, make a four-loop bow by forming one loop to the right and one loop to the left and repeating until you have two loops on each side, resembling the wings of a butterfly. Pinch the loops together in the center (figure A).
- Use floral wire to secure the loops in the center (figure B).
- Make trim for the body by looping a 1/4" gold ribbon in the configuration used to resemble the AIDS-awareness ribbon. Hot-glue together, then hot-glue the looped ribbon to the top of the four-looped bow. Hot-glue three gold beads on top of the gold ribbon (figure C).
- To create a ladybug, cut a 3' piece of 1-1/2"-wide grosgrain ribbon, red with white dots. Using white thread and a needle, begin a running stitch along one short end of the ribbon, turn and continue along the long edge of the ribbon, then turn and stitch the other short end (figure D).
- Pull the thread, gathering the ribbon into a circle (figure E). Stitch a knot through the beginning point to secure the circle. This will be the body of the ladybug.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5, using a piece of narrow black grosgrain ribbon to make the head of the ladybug (figure F). Stitch or hot-glue the head to the body.
- To make a daisy, tie knots in 1/2" turquoise silk ribbon every 3" or 4" (figure G).
- Using a needle and thread, make one stitch between each of the knots, starting the stitch on the right side of the ribbon, going through to the back of the ribbon and coming back up to the right side of the ribbon (figure H).
- Pull the thread to gather the petals of the daisy, and secure by stitching to the first petal (figure I).
- Follow the directions in steps 4 and 5 for the ladybug head to make a circle from white grosgrain ribbon for the center of the daisy. Stitch or hot-glue the center of the flower in place. Use the green silk ribbon to make a two-loop bow, then stitch or hot-glue it to the back of the daisy for leaves (figure J).
- Decorate the garden gloves by hot-gluing on butterflies, ladybugs and daisies (figure K).
