Replacing the Cabinet Doors

  1. To repaint the doors, be sure to put paper down to protect the Plexiglas (figure A). If you've ordered new doors, you obviously won't need to repaint.

  2. To attach the hinges, here's a great tip from Ryan.

    • Line up the hinge with the corner of the door and mark with a pencil (figure B). Move the hinge down to the mark and that's where you'll screw in the hinge -- one hinge-length away from the corner.

    • Screw in the three holes, but start with the center hole first so the hinge will align properly.

    • Use a vix bit (figure C) to make the pilot holes for the screws so it doesn't drill too deep.

  3. Once the pilot holes are done, it's time to screw in the hinges.

    Attaching the New Doors

  4. Be sure to position the doors so they open toward the sink. Line up the door inside of the opening and center, and pull the door all the way to the left.

  5. Screw in the hinges (top hinges first, so you're not fighting gravity) to the cabinets (figure D).

    Reworking the Old Drawer Fronts

In the last episode, the drawer fronts were removed and painted. Now it's time to mount them to the old drawers.

  6. First, use a Jig-It (figure E) to find the center of drawer front and mark it. Place the Jig-It along the line to ensure that the holes are lined up.

  7. Make marking holes with the drill bit.

  8. Since the hardware is too big, you'll need to drill a countersink hole with a bigger bit (mark drill bit with tape -- figure F -- to prevent drilling too deep).

  9. Screw handles in place.

  10. Attach drawer front by marking three spots on the drawer, and make sure you avoid the hardware.

  11. Drill countersink holes.

  12. Drill screw holes, line up and attach the drawer front.

  13. Finish the rest of the drawer fronts and attach.

In the next segment, Ryan and the homeowners change the lighting fixtures, paint the walls and the basement door is transformed into a message board with chalkboard paint.
