Roller Shade

Use any fabric to customize a roller shade.

Materials:

an old roller shade or a new shade kit
fabric
fusible interfacing
iron and ironing board
scissors
straightedge
matte knife
staple gun
seam sealant
tape measure

Steps:

  1. Start by determining whether the shade will be mounted inside the casing (which most roller shades are), or on the casing to cover the trim when extended. The featured shade was mounted inside. Begin by measuring the window's length , inside the casing or outside, including the casing and add 12 inches. Measure the width in the same fashion and add two inches. Then cut fabric and interfacing to these measurements.
  2. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric following the manufacturer's instructions. The featured shade said to put the coated side of the interfacing down on the wrong side of our fabric, and using a lightweight pressing cloth, start in the center of the fabric and work out to the edges. The iron should be set on the wool setting. Apply steam and pressure for 10 to 15 seconds, then move over, overlapping sections as you press. Once done, turn the fabric over to the right side and repeat the same steps.
  3. To cut the shade down to size, measure either the old barrel from the old shade (which has been removed already) or measure the barrel from the new shade kit, NOT including the pins on the ends. When removing the old shade, mark an arrow on the barrel the direction the shade falls--this will help later. The finished shade width should be 1/8 inch shorter than this dimension. Trim the width of the fabric using a straightedge and matte knife, and then seal the edges with a seam sealant.
  4. Turn the bottom edge of the fabric under 1-1/2 inches and stitch or fuse to form a 1-1/4 inch casing for the wooden bottom slat. Then staple the top edge to the barrel, keeping in mind the direction the shade should fall. Roll it up and install it.

Note: Don't mount the roller shade hardware until the shade is already made and mounted to the barrel. The fabric shade may be bulkier than a regular plastic roller shade and may not fit into the brackets when the shade is completely rolled up.
