    Figure A

Tom Wang's chalk artistry is much like Tibetan sand painting: beautiful yet temporary, with the elements washing both away. Wang says sidewalk chalk artistry began during World War II, when many masterpieces were seized or destroyed, and artists couldn't afford canvas for new creations.

Wang begins with a sketch before transferring his design to the sidewalk. Once the design is transferred, color brings Wang's vision to life. Because he works with an imperfect surface -- a sidewalk -- Wang adjusts his technique to harmonize with the pavement. Sometimes he mixes water with the chalk and paints it on for a more even application (figure A).

Hobbyists can begin with inexpensive sidewalk chalk and work up to more expensive pastels as interest and skill grow. High-quality pastel chalk sets can be purchased for around $20.
