After 10 years of play, Greg Grandy still enjoys the challenges, fun and camaraderie presented by footbag.

The game of footbag -- commonly called hackeysack -- is like juggling with your feet. Invented in Oregon in the 1970s, the game has grown in popularity over the past three decades. Footbag enthusiast Greg Grandy recommends that even the most advanced players should always try to play with someone considered to be better at the game. He says it's the best way to improve skills. Freestyle footbag -- or kicking the bag between friends -- is most frequently played by beginners who use it to hone their skills and gradually learn tricks. With experience, players work up to "net." In a net game, footbag skills are challenged as teams score points. The game consists of four players, two on each side, and uses a point system similar to that of volleyball. Grandy says it can take players a year or more to become proficient at net. Type of hackeysacks: - Crocheted freestyle bag: best for beginners
- Multipaneled freestyle bag: a "trick" bag for beginners and intermediate-level players
- Net bag: good for advanced users and tricks
- Glow-in-the-dark bags: have small lights that allow the bag to be used for night footbag games.
