    photocopies

    PHOTO

    Figure A
    1. To prepare the fabric, tear out a workable piece of canvas by making a small cut at one end of the fabric and then tear it.

    2. Cover one side of the fabric with gel medium, using a bit of water and a brush. Let dry.

    3. After the canvas has dried, draw and make various marks on the canvas with oil pastel and blend the color into the canvas using a paintbrush and water (figure A). Add a second color for interest as desired.

    4. Add polka dots onto the canvas using a sponge paint dauber.

    5. To make the doll, adhere the photocopy to watercolor paper using gel medium.

    Figure C
    6. Brush the image with the buff acrylic paint. Allow this layer of paint to dry.

    7. Cut the image out and then paint the front and back using water-soluble oil pastel and a wet brush. Allow to dry.

    8. Transfer a desired image (hands with heart for this project) to the front of the figure using a household iron. Place the iron on the back of the photocopy with the heat on high. Lift copy to check and see if it is transferring properly.

    9. Add any details with a pen and marker (figure B).

    10. >Measure the figure for its dress. Make marks on the fabric on either side of the figure. Allow a little extra for sewing.

    11. Fold the fabric and cut two layers of the skirt out at once (figure C).

Tip: For a fun option, try gluing another head to the back to make a double-sided portrait.
