    (Continued from page 2)

    PHOTO
The gingerbread house begins to come together as a front door is cut out of felt and decorated with more cut outs. The white icing felt roof is decorated with the multicolored hearts cut and sewn on row-by-row creating a candy roof that looks ready to eat.

    1. To create the roof peaks, take another piece of brown felt and measure each side 7-inches up at an angle, find your center and cut two triangular sides to create the roof peak (figure A).

    2. To create the door:

      1. Cut out an arched door from a larger piece of blue felt using the arched door template. Tip: If not working with a template improvise and cut out different shapes as desired.
      2. Cut out a smaller piece of white felt for the panel on the doorframe and then cut it in half (figure B).
      3. Select a few hearts and arrange them to create the effect of bushes lining the front door.
      4. Sew the pieces on at the sewing machine. Note: If a felt piece is at the edge of the panel pin it in place so that it does not get caught in the seam when sewing the panels together later.
      5. Sew the pompom door handle and the candy cane pipe cleaner doorframe by hand (figure C).

    3. To construct the roof:

      1. Start with two pieces of 9" x 12" felt and trim 9-inch dimension down to 7-inches.
      2. Lay out your felt hearts in rows. Stay clear of the edge.
      3. Attach a piece of transparent tape so that the rows do not shift around while you are placing your hearts in rows.
      4. Sew the four rows of heart shingles onto your roof panel. Note: Attach a piece of tape on the last row of heart shingles to keep felt hearts in place, until they are trapped in the seam used to attach the roof panel to the side wall panel, so they will hang a little over the wall panel (figure D).
      5. All of the panels are complete.
