This homemade bottle buoy is a perfect fit for any pool.

    Figure A

    Materials:

Four 2-liter drink bottles with caps
    Acrylic paint
    Curling ribbon or string
    Scissors
    4 bricks
    4 plastic trash bags
    Hot glue

    1. Squirt paint into the bottle and swirl it around until the inside is completely covered. Pour out any excess. Leave the cap off and let the paint dry for several days. You may need to rotate the bottle as the paint dries for complete coverage.

    2. Hot-glue the cap back on the bottle.

    3. Wrap each brick in a plastic trash bag and carefully hot-glue to seal. But be careful: hot glue can melt the bag, so use only a little.

    4. Tie a long piece of ribbon on the brick (figure A). Tie the other end of the string to the neck end of the bottle so that when it's placed in the water, the bottom end of the bottle will stand up and bob like a buoy. The length will depend on the depth of the pool.

    5. Place bottles in the pool, either in lanes for relays or as bases and make up game to go with them.

    Tips:

    • Have an adult supervise when you use hot glue so you don't burn yourself.

    • Be careful not to get acrylic paint on your clothes -- it can stain.

    • NEVER swim or play around a pool without adult supervision.
