The DIY kids demonstrate how easy it is to make these colorful buckets, which can be used in the pool as a floating target for a small ball.

    Figure B

    Materials:

Three to six 2-liter plastic bottles with caps
    Scissors
    Paper
    8" plate
    Ink pen
    Dimensional paint
    Craft foam
    Small rubber or foam balls

    1. Cut a plastic bottle in half widthwise as evenly as possible all the way around.

    2. Trace the plate onto a piece of paper to make a circle. In the middle of the circle trace around the bottle to make an inner circle (figure A). Now draw around the big circle to create a flower shape. Cut out the paper flower ring. This is your pattern.

    3. Trace the flower ring onto a piece of craft foam and cut it out. Cut the hole in the middle just a tiny bit smaller than it's drawn so the ring will fit snugly around the bottle.

    4. Slide the ring over the bottle. Squirt some dimensional paint around the bottle (figure B) where the craft foam meets and let it dry. Repeat with several colors.

    5. Put water in the bottle up to the top of the foam ring. When it's floating in the pool, the water inside will give it some weight and keep it from tipping over. For fun, assign points to the different colors.

    Tips:

    • Have an adult supervise when you use scissors.

    • NEVER play or swim in or around a pool without adult supervision!
