Materials: 1 yd. of polyester velvet fabric Pillow (at least 12" x 12") Cardboard Pencil Scissors Stick glue Paper Iron-on seam tape Spray starch Clothespins Iron and ironing board One adult - Cut 2 pieces of velvet that are at least 4" larger than your pillow form. We're made ours 17". This will make it easier in the end when we close it up.
- Draw your initial letter on the cardboard. Be sure to keep it simple and big. Cut it out and trace onto another piece of cardboard (figure A). Cut that one out so that you have two matching letters. Repeat again if your cardboard is thin. Glue them all together (your letter needs to have some depth).
- Set your iron for the wool/silk setting. That's about medium high.
- Place the letter BACKWARD (figure B)on your ironing board and lay the fabric -- velvet side down -- over the letter.
- Spray the fabric with a small amount of starch. Lay a sheet of paper over the fabric. LIGHTLY hold a dry iron on the letter for 8 to 10 seconds, moving slightly so you don't get round iron marks on your velvet. Have an adult help you with this! Repeat moving the letter around the fabric until both pieces are covered with your initial.
- On ONLY one of the velvet panels, iron the seam tape to the VELVETY side on all 4 edges. Peel the paper (figure C) from 3 sides of seam tape. Lay the second panel of fabric, velvet side down, over the first piece and iron the three sides. Again watch the heat and use paper between the velvet and the iron.
- Turn right side out (figure D) and check to see that all of your seams are glued down. Retouch with the iron if necessary. Insert the pillow.
- Turn the fourth edge in on itself. Hold in place with clothespins and iron the fourth seam closed.
Tips: - NEVER use an iron without adult supervision!
- Always have an adult supervise when you use scissors.
- Practice the time and heat setting that works best for you on a scrap piece of velvet. Polyester/acetate velvet can melt and make a mess of your iron if you're not careful!
