    1. Prime all the wood. We found our wood cut to the required length in the finished-lumber department of our hardware store. Ask them to cut it for you if they don't stock it.

    2. Wearing protective gear, mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's directions. Fill the bucket with concrete mix about 1/3 or 1/2 full. Mix in the water until the consistency is like thick batter.

    3. While the concrete is still wet, insert the fence picket into the bucket. Make sure it's straight and tape it in place (figure A) to hold until the concrete sets.

    4. While the concrete is setting, work on your three slat signs. Paint slats with a background color and words like your family's name, house number or just "Welcome." (figure B). You may want to write them out with a pencil before you actually paint them so they are centered. Let the paint dry and shellac over it.

    5. Screw the slat signs onto the fence picket (figure C).

    6. Optional: Plant flowers in the top of the bucket. Don't forget to drill drainage holes above the concrete line if you do.

    Tips:

    • Read ALL the manufacturer's directions and precautions before mixing concrete and HAVE AN ADULT SUPERVISE.

    • Make sure you wear goggles, gloves and dust mask when mixing concrete.

    • Mix concrete outside and NEVER pour concrete mix, wet or dry, down the sink or toilet. Always dispose of extra concrete outside.

Products: All products are available at craft, home centers and all-purpose stores nationwide.
