    Materials:

    Wax crayons
Light-colored fabric (cotton muslin or duck cloth)
    Scissors
    Tracing paper
    Masking tape
    Hot glue
    Pencil
    Ruler
    Dowels
    Ribbon
    Iron and ironing board

    1. Cut the fabric any size you like. We made a 24" x 24" square.

    2. Draw pictures on tracing paper that say something about who you are, like your name, your state, your school, your hobbies and your family. Color them with the crayons VERY HARD and THICK (figure A).

    3. Here's the tricky part: if you write words, you'll need to write them BACKWARD (figure B) on the tracing paper, so when you iron them on, they'll read the right way.

    4. Set the iron on HIGH and lay the fabric on the ironing board. Arrange your designs face down and tape them in place with masking tape (figure C). Lay an extra sheet of paper over the design to protect the iron.

    5. Slowly move the iron over the design. Lift the protective top paper to check your progress. The design paper will look wet or waxy as the design melts off.

    6. Fold over the edges of the fabric and hot-glue them down. Use the edge of the ruler to press the seams flat (figure D). Leave the top edge for now.

    7. Lay the dowel at the top of your banner on the WRONG SIDE. Glue the top of the banner to the dowel. Tie a ribbon at the two ends of the dowel to hang it by. If you like, you could glue extra decorations like ribbon around the edges for a more finished look.

    Tips:

    • Have an adult supervise when you use scissors.

    • NEVER use an iron without adult supervision.
