Materials: Plaster of Paris Vermiculite Bucket A nail and hammer A pencil Spray shellac Spoon Carving tools Newspaper Rubber gloves Water Wax cartons Dust mask Sandpaper Safety glasses - Put on safety equipment -- gloves, mask and eye protection -- first! Then spread out newspaper to protect your work area.
- Measure out 4 cups of plaster and 4 cups of vermiculite (figure A). Mix dry ingredients well.
- Add 3 cups of water and mix thoroughly. Mixture will be stiff.
- Pour into the wax-carton molds (figure B) and let it set for one hour.
- Clean up mixing utensils outside.
- Peel off the wax carton (figure C). On each of the four sides, draw your statue's image: front view, profiles and rear view.
- Begin carving. While wearing your glasses, use the hammer and nail or other carving tools to chisel away stone material (figure D). Use sandpaper to carve small or hard-to-reach places and use a wet sponge to help soft-carve any hard edges.
Tips: - Always have an adult supervise when you are mixing plaster and using tools.
- Have an adult read the manufacturer's directions and any handling precautions on packaging.
- NEVER pour plaster, dry or wet, down drains or in toilets -- it will clog pipes. Always wash up buckets and mixing spoons outside.
- Remember to wear your glasses when chiseling to avoid getting flying grit in your eyes.
- Vermiculite is used in potting plants. Look for it in the garden section of stores.
All products can be purchased at craft, hardware and all-purpose stores nationwide. No special products are needed.
