    Materials:

    Modeling clay
    Measuring cup
    Plaster of Paris
    Pencil or dowel
    Spoon
    Old bowl for mixing
    Water
    Tempera paint or food coloring

    1. Work the clay with your hands to get it warm. Using the pencil or dowel rod, roll the modeling clay (figure A) out into a slab about 4" by 6" by 1" thick.

    2. Pinch the corners up to make a rectangular-shaped dish (figure B). The modeling clay is now a mold.

    3. Mix plaster according to manufacturers instructions, usually two parts plaster to one part water. Mix until all the plaster is dissolved and is the consistency of batter.

    4. Add a few drops of tempera paint or food coloring to tint the plaster (figure C). Mix thoroughly. If using food coloring, you may need a good bit to get a strong, bright color.

    5. Pour the plaster into the mold (figure D) and smooth out the top.

    6. Let the plaster cure for one to three hours, until it hardens.

    7. While chalk is drying, wash all your mixing utensils very well. Wash all of your utensils outside -- plaster of Paris will clog your plumbing. Never pour liquid plaster down the drain or toilet.

    8. When the chalk is finished drying, peel the modeling clay from around it. Reuse modeling clay to make more chalk.

    9. It's helpful if you can let the chalk air dry for another several hours before use. Store in a plastic bag.

    10. When you are finished drawing your designs on the sidewalk, wash chalk away with water.

    Tips:

    • Have an adult supervise anytime you are mixing plaster.

    • NEVER put plaster of Paris down drains or toilets -- it will clog pipes.

Products can be purchased at hardware, discount and all-purpose stores. No special products are needed.
