Materials: Wood Saw Carpenter's square Masking tape Small hinges Hot glue Scissors Sandpaper Nails Ruler and tape measure Wood glue White glue Lock flap Card stock Paint Safety glasses Hammer Pencil Spring clamp Brushes Pliers Fabric Shellac - Measure and cut the wood for the box and the lid. The box will be 10 inches by 7 inches by 4 inches, and the box top will be 10 inches by 7 inches by 1-1/2 inches (figure A).
- Using masking tape, tape the pieces of wood together for the top and bottom to form two rectangles. Add wood glue to each corner as you go (figure B). The masking tape will help hold the rectangles together while you glue and nail them.
- Using small nails, nail the corners together. If the nails are too small to hold by hand, use the pliers to hold them and get them started.
- Next, sand (figure C), prime, paint and shellac the box and the boxtop.
- Trace the outside of the box and boxtop onto card stock. Cut out two rectangular pieces of card stock.
- Cut four pieces of fabric that will cover the card stock. Two pieces should be one inch larger all the way around and two should be one-half inch smaller all the way around. (Approximately two pieces measuring 11" x 8" and two measuring 9-1/2" x 6-1/2".)
- Brush white glue on one side of the card stock and cover with a larger piece of fabric. Flip it over and glue the edges over (figure D). Glue the smaller piece of fabric on the back covering the raw, folded edge. Repeat for second piece of card stock.
- Placing a bead of glue on the boxtop edge, glue the covered card stock to the top. Use small nails to secure it at the edges. Repeat for the bottom of the box (figure E).
- Put the box together, lining up the top and bottom, and mark the placement for hinges on the back. Hot-glue or screw the hinges in place (figure F). Do the same for the lock flap on the front.
Tips: - ALWAYS have an adult supervise when you are using sharp tools and hot glue.
- If wood is too difficult for you to work with, you can use cardboard and just glue things together. Omit the nailing steps.
- Make your box any size you wish -- the only key is that the top and bottom are the same width and length.
