Materials: Cookie tin -- (preferably square) 32 small magnets Paint pens Ruler 32 small plastic figurines Magnetic sheets Permanent markers Pencil Scissors Hot glue - Paint and decorate the cookie tin any color you like.
- Trace the outline of the lid onto a magnetic sheet. Cut outline just inside the line so that the magnet is slightly smaller than the tin lid and will easily fit inside for storage (figure A). Repeat for multiple game boards.
- Draw a game board on magnetic sheet and color with permanent markers (figure B).
- To make the game pieces, hot glue figurines or small plastic toys onto 32 small magnets (figure C). For chess pieces each player will need one king, one queen, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, and eight pawns. If you do not have figurines, just draw a symbol on each magnet for the pieces.
- Repeat steps as applicable to create backgammon, checkers, a maze, or ticktacktoe.
Checkers: (figure D) Depending on the size of your lid, measure out a square. Using a ruler, draw a grid that divides the square into 64 squares -- eight rows and eight columns. Color with two colors, alternating squares. Clean the magnets with soap and water and dry well. Paint magnets with paint pens. You will need 32 pieces for each game (16 per color of two different colors). For checkers, color the pieces but do not glue on figurines. Backgammon: (figure E) Starting with a fresh piece of magnet sheet, divide it in half. Draw 24 long, skinny triangles on the board, 12 on each side, alternating two colors. You will need five dice for this game. Mark the sides of one die with a permanent marker as follows: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64. This die is for bets. You will need 15 magnet markers for each player (30 total -- you can use your checker markers.) Maze: (figure F) Create your own maze or role-playing board game. Try gluing old action figures to the magnets for game pieces. Ticktacktoe: (figure G) Create a nine-square game board, three rows and three columns. You will need five colored magnets of each color (10 total) for game pieces. Tips: - Have an adult supervise anytime you use hot glue and scissors.
- Spray paint may work best to paint your tin.
- If you cannot find figurines or small magnets, you can make your games pieces from scraps of magnetic sheet and color to decorate.
- If you make a mistake when coloring your board with the permanent markers, you can start over by cleaning with rubbing alcohol.
