    Materials:

    Two old T-shirts
T-shirt yarn (see below for instructions for making)
    Scissors
    Hot glue
    Large safety pin
    String

    Instructions for bag:

    1. Turn T-shirt wrong side out.

    2. Snip a very small hole in the hem of each of the sleeves and neck of T-shirt (figure A). If there is a center seam, cut a hole on each side of the seam. Cut through only one thickness of fabric.

    3. Tie a piece of string, about 12 inches, to a large safety pin. Use the closed safety pin to thread the string through the hem of each sleeve and of the neck (figure B).

    4. Cinch up the fabric as tightly as you can and tie three square knots to secure (figure C). You are closing off these openings and don't want holes through which items can escape.

    5. Clip ends of string but not too short.

    6. Turn right side out.

    Instructions for handle:

    1. Cut one T-shirt into a continuous piece of yarn about one inch wide. Start at the bottom hem of the T-shirt and begin cutting it off, cutting around the shirt as you go. When you near your starting cut point, begin cutting up at an angle so that you can create one continuous piece of T-shirt yarn. Cut in this fashion until you reach under the sleeves and stop. Wind yarn into a ball.

    2. Cut three lengths of yarn about 8 feet each (figure D).

    3. Hot-glue the three ends together, laying one on top of the other. Braid the three pieces together (figure E). Finish by hot-gluing the ends together, layering one on top of the other. Try not to glue more than you have to. You do not want to make the end too bulky.

    4. At the bottom hem of the T-shirt bag -- which is now the opening of the bag -- clip one hole in the hem. Again, if there happens to be a center seam, cut the holes, one on either side of the seam.

    5. Using a safety pin, thread the T-shirt yarn through the hem (figure F) and tie off in a loop.

Tip: Always be careful when using sharp objects. Have an adult around to supervise.
